🥒 JoCo Garden-Growing Guide

Timing is Everything ⏲️

Here in North Central Texas, we're at a crucial transition point in the gardening calendar. Most summer vegetables need to be planted before mid-June. But end of May is the beginning of the fall planting season. That might sound backwards, but our unique climate gives us two distinct growing seasons that smart gardeners take advantage of.

Last Call for Summer Crops 🍉

If you haven't planted your heat-loving vegetables yet, you've got about a week or so left to get them in the ground. Okra, cucumbers, summer squash, and watermelon can still be planted from seed in late May and they'll have enough time to mature before our fall weather arrives. Just make sure you're prepared to keep them well-watered through the summer heat.

Get a Jump on Fall Favorites 🥦

This is the perfect time to start planning your fall garden. You can start seeds for fall broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage indoors now for transplanting in July and August. Your future self will thank you when you're harvesting fresh vegetables in October and November while your neighbors are buying expensive produce at the store.

Heat-Beating Herbs 🌿

Herbs like basil, oregano, and sage can still be planted in May and will thrive in our summer heat. Plant them near your tomatoes and peppers for natural pest control - plus you'll have fresh herbs all summer long for your cooking.
