🥒 JoCo Garden-Growing Guide

Welcome to June in North Central Texas, where the real gardening challenge begins! With temperatures climbing into the 90s and humidity that makes everything feel like a sauna, successful gardening is all about working smarter, not harder. The good news? There's still plenty you can plant and grow if you know the tricks.

Last Call for Heat Lovers 🌶️

You've got about two more weeks to get those final summer crops in the ground. Black-eyed peas, okra, and late-season corn can still be direct seeded in early June and will thrive in our upcoming heat. These are the champions of Texas summer - they actually prefer the scorching temperatures that make tomatoes sulk and lettuce bolt.

If you're thinking about melons, cucumbers, or summer squash, plant them now or wait until your fall garden. They need time to establish before the real heat hits in July and August.

Water Wisdom 💧

Here's the secret most gardeners learn the hard way: deep, infrequent watering beats daily sprinkles every time. Water early morning (before 8 AM) to give plants time to drink up before the sun gets serious. Evening watering works too, but morning is better for disease prevention.

Consider drip irrigation or soaker hoses for your vegetable beds. They deliver water directly to root zones without wasting a drop to evaporation. Your water bill and your plants will thank you.

Shade is Your Friend ☂️

This is the time to break out the shade cloth if you haven't already. Even heat-loving plants appreciate some afternoon relief when temperatures soar above 95°F. A simple 30-50% shade cloth can extend your growing season and keep plants productive through the dog days of summer.

Herbs That Handle Heat 🌿

Basil, oregano, rosemary, and sage are your summer herb superstars. Plant them now and they'll provide fresh flavors all season long. Mexican mint marigold (Texas tarragon) is particularly well-suited to our climate and makes an excellent substitute for French tarragon, which struggles in our heat and humidity.

Fall Planning Starts Now 🍂

It might seem crazy to think about fall when we're just entering summer, but smart gardeners are already planning their autumn gardens. Start seeds for broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage indoors now for transplanting in July. Your October harvest will be the envy of the neighborhood.
